Different Types Of Memory Have Different Key Positions

While installing different types of memory, people are generally confused about the key positions of memory. Basically, there are many types of memory like RAM memory with further categories of RAM memory. They all have different key positions. Different key positions are required because of two intentions. Firstly, it facilitates full proof installation and secondly, it disallows the installation of incompatible type of memory.

For knowing the key positions, you must know about DIMM memory, which is the dual in-line memory module that consists of a series of dynamic random access memory integrated circuits. There are two notches on the bottom edge of 168-pin DIMM. The specific location of a notch determines the particular feature of the module. The first notch is DRAM key position while the second notch is voltage key position. The first notch signifies reserved future use (RFU), registered and un-buffered while second notch signifies 5V, 3V and reserved. These key positions are for bottom edge of DIMM while the upper DIMM is an un-buffered 3.3V 168-pin DIMM. Therefore, you must not be confused for the key positions for different types of memory and you can self-install the memory.
